Interesting radio show from The People’s Pharmacy on natural mental health with Dr. Tieraona Low Dog. The whole show is good, but about 13 minutes in is a discussion of depression meds and exercise. Research is showing that many medications are very effective for very depressed people, but only slightly better than placebo for mild to moderate depression. Starting at around 18-20 minutes in is a discussion of natural remedies including amounts of exercise needed, sunlight, fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids, comprehensive whole food diet including magnesium & B12, Mediterranean Diet, glycemic load, overuse of caffeine, B vitamins (effect neurotransmitter levels and cognitive decline), D vitamins, magnesium, St. John’s Wort, Rhodiola Rosa, and Ginseng. Also the importance of gratitude, life meaning, and friendships.
